National Air Rifle Championships

Scouts

NRSA logoWell, what a weekend! Gorgeous sunny warm(ish) days coupled with literally freezing nights saw a smaller squad from 3rd Hampton Hill at our annual assault on the National Scout Air Rifle Championships held at Bisley’s excellent facilities, the world home of Small-bore shooting.

As usual we took part in the main event which comprised 6yd air rifle and pistol, rifle knock-out and field target, along with various of our team trying biathlon, own pistol and rifle and .22 small bore rifle and the 300m full bore rifle. This event has grown over the years and this year’s was the second biggest event in the NSRA’s history with 684 competitors, eclipsed only by the 2002 Commonwealth games for which the centre was built. How did we do? Read on…..

All of our team competed in the knock out with most of us falling by the way side in the early rounds, however a few of our team got through and Tate C and Sam H deserve special mention for reaching the last 16 of the junior section; an excellent achievement. Some good scores followed in field target, rifle and pistol but once again special mention for Sam H shooting ‘own pistol’ using 3HH’s Gamo achieved an excellent 92/100 on his two best cards and won the silver medal in this section.

We also achieved bronze medals in team pistol for the best scores for four members of the same group, so well done again to Sam H, Tate C, Alex L and me! I was also extremely fortunate to shoot a lifetime best (by a country mile!) in pistol with 98/100 on my best two cards and have taken the gold in the senior main pistol event. If I ever work out how I achieved this I’ll be a happy man!

The above illustrates the depth of talent we have in shooting at 3HH and this is in no small part thanks to Simon F who as ever helped in this year’s preparations, so well deserved thanks to Simon. Akela Jon H also receives our thanks for help in the practice weeks and of course, with Craig W for being our adult leaders and support for the weekend. My thanks to all, well done team, look out 2008!

If you’re interested in taking up the sport, we’ll be running our annual NSRA Youth Proficiency Scheme again in the spring so keep your eyes open!
