Scouts Frosty Cycle Expedition Adventures

Monday, October 25th, 2010
Scouts

Without a single puncture in sight, 22 of 3HH’s Scouts and a large number of supporting adult leaders embarked on a frosty weekend’s adventurous expedition to Cobham.

theturninghubIt was a cracking couple of days ride and everyone did brilliantly.

The expedition was an incredible culmination of all the work we had done this term in partnership with “The Turning Hub” mobile bike club. 3HH’s Scouts are now well drilled in fixing punctures, adjusting gears / brakes, defensive riding techniques and riding around tricky slalom courses on dark rainy evenings! It’s hoped that one day they may even see fit to actually clean their bikes :-)

All of the Scouts should be proud of nailing the 47km ride: 23km on the first day’s route with a further 24km on the second day. It’s definitely the furthest that many had ever cycled before. To top the weekend off we also tried out the new caving experience at Walton Firs. With nearly everyone having a go at clambering / crouching / kneeling / belly crawling around the inside of the tunnel complex, complete with dinosaurs and stalactites, it was declared it to be utterly fantastic.

Thanks to all the adult team that made this excellent weekend so very successful. And in particular, a huge thank you to Jonathan, Melissa and the rest of the star team at “The Turning Hub” who gave up so much of their time over many weeks to help 3HH’s Scouts achieve their cyclists activity badge.

3rd Hampton Hill Sweep the Board

3HH Group Explorers Scouts

sc-as-maatarA crisply cold weekend of shooting air rifle, pistol, field target, knockout, small-bore, full-bore and biathlon culminated in 3rd Hampton Hill’s best ever results at the annual National Scout Air Rifle Championships.

This year was once again their biggest entry with some 782 shooters from Scout and Explorer groups across the country, 3rd Hampton Hill entering 9 Scout shooters, 5 adults and a team of 5 from Hampton Explorers. Whilst we won’t know the full results for a few days, a closing ceremony chock full of awards for the top three places definitely left us with smiles on our faces.

Firstly, in the Biathlon, a completion to run 400m, shoot prone, run 400m, shoot kneeling, run 400m, shoot standing and then run 400m saw the junior competition and gold medal won by Tom H, even though he missed a target at prone!

The knockout is a competition requiring nerves of steel as well as good aim, standing shoulder to shoulder with your opponent aiming to be the first to knock down 5 targets and Rhiannon N continued with her good streak in this discipline taking equal third place and a bronze medal. Considering the size of the field this was an excellent result, especially as so many of us fell by the wayside very early in the competition.

Scouts

Hi guys, I’d like to say what a pleasure it was to see you all Sunday morning keen and raring for the fray despite the horrible weather :) You all played like beings possesed !! Despite being drawn against one of the better practised teams in the first round you rallied and played as a well rehearsed team from then on and acheived a very well deserved 3rd place!

There were silky skills in attack, cheeky and ferocious goals shared throughout the team, good passing and distribution in midfield, tenacious, terrier like defending, and solid and acrobatic goalkeeping. A wonderful effort which was exciting to watch.

Well done all of you, and thank you for playing that extra game at the end. Their leader said that despite their scoreline they enjoyed their two games against us best of all. A credit to your sportsmanship!

Our thanks to Clare for organising our entry, to Ann for shivering bravely on the touchline, to Paul for not refereeing :) ) and to all you parents who gave such wonderfully biased support :)

..and that’s Gradbatch not Gradback for the unitiated! Well as advised this was always going to be a different camp, however finding out belatedly that we were camped in one of the wettest places in England was mildly disappointing although it didn’t stop any of the activities; I suppose the family of ducks lodging with us for the week should have given us a clue!

Fancy messing about on the water? Scouts Water Weekend Invitation 11-13 June 2010

Monday, May 17th, 2010
Scouts

The Richmond Upon Thames Scout District are again running the incredibly popular and utterly fantastic “Water Weekend”. During the event, you’ll get an opportunity to try your hand at: sailing, canoeing, raft building, rowing and dragon boat racing! For those of you not already sporting them, this means you’ll have a clutch of new badges by the end of the camp. :-)

The camp will take place at Thames Young Mariners in Ham, and will run from Friday 11th June at 18:00hrs until Sunday 13th June at 16:00hrs.

Unfortunately the camp will be limited to a fixed number for the whole of the District and 3HH will be allocated just 20 places – these will be offered on a “first come, first served” basis and as such we cannot guarantee you a slot.

To see photos from last year’s camp please click here.

If you want to come along, please make sure you return your form with full payment to Paul C without delay.

Scouts build chariots

Saturday, May 8th, 2010
Scouts

As staggering as it seems, some of the scouts don’t find tying knots very exciting. How odd ;-)

So to liven things up a little, we set them the challenge of building chariots and racing around the hall. Now that was more like it! (although we did have to ban them from attaching the blades to their axles like Queen Boadicea)

Do feel free to check out the photos and video to see more…

Summer Camp Letter

Monday, May 3rd, 2010
Scouts

Hi all, please see attached the Scout Summer Camp letter for our Peak District extravaganza at the end of July. This year we’ve gone for a complete change and are camping in a beautiful site in the south of the Peak District right next to a stream (hope no one sleep walks)!

We have a maximum of 36 spaces so application will be by post to ensure fair allocation and preference will be given to those still in the troop come July. There may be Young Leader spaces but this will be dependant on available seats, but do let me know if you’re ineterested.
