National Scout Air Rifle Championships 2009

Monday, October 19th, 2009
Scouts

I never expected that we’d achieve quite the results of last year and this did prove correct, however our results are extremely good all the same and point to a depth of ability that will see us continue to going from strength to strength.

Last year we were pistol champions and this year took silver with our team of Jon, his daughter Ruth, Jacob H and Tom H. Last year we were also the overall junior champions winning the Duke of Connaught’s junior trophy, competed for by a pre-selected team of three with scores taken from rifle, pistol and field target and this year took bronze with our team of Dylan, Jacob and Rhiannon. Tate won the trophy for the most improved Explorer in rifle and was described by the competition organiser as a talent to watch. Whilst we didn’t come away with much actual silverware, the overall results were excellent and point to a continuing bright future for target shooting at 3rd Hampton Hill.

Chubb Live Fire Demo day on Thursday 29 October 2009

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009
Scouts

scout fire saftety badge flamesWe have been able to get 16 places for the forthcoming Chubb Live Fire demo morning on Thursday 29 Oct 2009.

In conjunction with the Fire and Rescue Service, Chubb organises local fire demonstrations that Scouts can take part in in order to complete their fire safety badge. Scouts have the opportunity to use an extinguisher on a real live fire, and visit a fire station which in our case will be at Sunbury. The event should take approximately 2.5 hours and, if possible, may include a tour of the fire station.

Update 1 Oct 2009: We have now filled all the available slots for this event. Please feel free to ask to be put on the reserve list in case we manage to secure some more places.

Scouts Swimming Gala and Dayprowl

Friday, September 11th, 2009
Scouts

Hi all, please see attached two fliers, one for Dayprowl and one for the swimming gala.

Dayprowl is an all day incident hike in the countryside where teams of 5 or so visit various bases where fun challenges of many varieties await. We are the current joint champions here, so looking forward to a good turn out we have entered two teams for Talons and two for Claws; Scouts of all ages are encouraged to apply for a place on a team.

The swimming gala is for teams of six and again we’ll be entering a team from Talons and one from Claws, selection being at Hampton Pool next Friday 18th September from 7pm. The teams consist of three older Scouts and three younger ones, so again we invite interest form all troop members whatever their age.

Please note the ‘return by’ dates on the flyers and get your replies back to your troop evening ASAP!

Welcome back to Friday Talons Scouts

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
Scouts

Hi there Scouts,

We hope that you’ve all had awesome summer holidays … most likely driving your parents mad :-) And now it’s almost time to start Scouts once again after the long break. So just as a quick reminder we meet again for the new term on Friday 11 September at 7.30 pm.

On the first night back, we’ll have the usual games, talk about the term’s programme and promote the new PLs and APLs. We’ll save all the details for then so as to not spoil the surprise. But just to give you some warning, our second night back on 18 Sept will be swimming at Hampton Pool. You’ll need to be there for 7pm with £2.90 per person please. At the swimming as well as have a monster splash, we’ll be picking teams for the District Swimming Gala as well as helping some of you achieve your next staged swimming badge.

Look forward to seeing you soon!

Regards
Paul, Simon and the whole of the Talons Leadership Team

NPL Water Rockets Competition

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
Scouts

Well done to Chris, Kieran, Mimi and Will from Claws for their excellent performance at this year’s NPL Water Rocket Competition.

The team’s excellent design and build work resulted in a rocket that flew straight and true and got the Scout firing the launcher only a little wet on take off, well alright soaked! We hit the first zone with our first and third flights and a bullseye with the second one giving flight times of 17, 33 and 18 seconds. Full results and pictures will appear on the NPL website in due course.

The launcher after some years sterling service is now pretty much defunct and a hard time was had getting it through scrutineering this time. Ideally we’d like to take this to summer camp as an activity, so is there a parent out there who could build us a more robust replacement? Full instructions are available from a link on the above website so little or no design work would be needed and if it can’t be built for camp, having one (preferably two so both troops can compete) ready for next years event would be fantastic. Please talk to any of the leaders.

Talon Scouts Go Rowing

Getting out onto the water is fast becoming a real favourite for 3HH’s scouts.

20090612 Talons Scouts go rowing

We were delighted to once again join our good friends at the 14th Richmond Boat House for a wonderful evening’s rowing between Richmond and Twickenham. To see more of what we got up to please click here to check out the photos.

Unlike our last adventure out, the sun was shining and the tide reasonably gentle. And the scene was perfectly set for a few impromptu races! :-)

Massive thanks again to Vic, Anna, Roy and Trevor for hosting our visit. We’re already looking forward to our next trip out…

Scouts’ Summer Term Final Evening – Great Parent Scout Cookout

Thursday, May 28th, 2009
Scouts

camp_cookingHi all, as ever our last night of Scouts in July will be the Great Parent Scout Cookout.

It’s one of my favourite Scout evenings and has nothing at all to do with the fact that I’m on the judging panel! This activity takes a while to plan and arrange your teams so here’s the information nice and early to allow you to do just that!

Any questions just ask.

Note to self, must remember, no lunch or dinner that day!

National Scout Air Rifle Competition Invitation

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009
Scouts

Hi all, please see attached the primary paperwork for NSARC 2009.

This has formerly been an open competition to anyone who has passed the YPS course but due to it’s poularity entries are now restricted to 9 Scouts, 6 Explorers and a limited number of non Range Officer adult entrants, all of whom now MUST be members of the association in one form or another to be able to shoot (there are no restrictions on non-shooting adults). There are no restriction on RO numbers fortunately.

If we get more than 15 Scouts and Explorers wanting to shoot, we’ll have to carry out a selection event. Dates on this are tight to ensure our entry so I’d be happy to receive your (paper) replies ASAP.

Please note this is open to all Explorers listed above, older Scouts who may be Explorers come October and all adults with shooting knowledge and the pre-requisite membership as well of course as Scouts who’ve passed YPS.

Big Green Shelterbox Scavenger Hunt

Monday, May 25th, 2009
Scouts

20090523 Scouts Big Green Shelter Box Scav HuntWell it was a hotter longer route with a far bigger boxes to carry than we had expected – but what an adventure!

The Scouts were simply terrific under some challenging demands. But we maxed out our mission to raise awareness for Shelterbox and the Scout Association. Our monster big green boxes were dragged all over Westminster, Covent Garden, Fleet Street, Victoria Station, Horseguards Parade … with photos taken wherever we stopped.

Well done to everyone who took part – and congratulations on earning your Global Challenge badge! :-)

A massive thanks to John, Darrell, Suzanne and Kirstie for coming along and making the day possible.

Scouts Summer Camp – Strict deadline

Monday, May 25th, 2009
Scouts

We now have 17 down for the Scout summer camp but the first closing date is looming as we have to get our numbers and activity forms in to the organisers.

What does this mean? Well quite clearly, I must have your paper slips and deposits in ASAP if you want to come as although there may be latitude to add numbers afterwards, equally the site may not let us if they’re full, so delay at your peril!

Please find attached therefore three forms: one is the summer camp invite letter, the second is the list of activities on offer and the third is the form you MUST return to me ASAP indicating what activities your Scout can enjoy; they’re quite strict, no form, no do! You MUST now send it to me at my home address ASAP so I can collate and send these off on my return from holiday.

Finally, although the camp cost is shown as £180, I’m looking to see if we can drop our costs by up to £20 and the more Scouts we have, the easier this becomes!

Many thanks all,

Paul Fitchett
