Some of 3HH’s Scouts braved Hawaii’s roaring surf (well the River Thames at Richmond) to enjoy an evening’s rowing. Well done folks…

Getting out onto the water is fast becoming a real favourite for 3HH’s scouts.

20090612 Talons Scouts go rowing

We were delighted to once again join our good friends at the 14th Richmond Boat House for a wonderful evening’s rowing between Richmond and Twickenham. To see more of what we got up to please click here to check out the photos.

Unlike our last adventure out, the sun was shining and the tide reasonably gentle. And the scene was perfectly set for a few impromptu races! :-)

Massive thanks again to Vic, Anna, Roy and Trevor for hosting our visit. We’re already looking forward to our next trip out…

Not quite Olympic standard rowing .. but not too shabby either!

20090509 Scouts Pulling 3HH’s Scouts decided to have a crack at some some pulling (aka rowing). We were generously hosted by the Scouts up the road at 1st Hampton’s boathouse one Saturday morning in early May.

At the end of this session – coupled with some theory and rope work that we’d already nailed one evening – we were delighted to have covered off all the requirements for us to be able to earn the “Pulling” activity badge.

Well done folks!

Scouts go rowing – Splish Splash

20080919 Scouts Rowing Last Friday night, 3HH scouts moved from the HQ to go rowing at Richmond. OK, so it wasn’t the most elegant of rowing – and it certainly wasn’t the Oxford v Cambridge boat race – but everyone had a great time.

The river was running very fast that night, and the darkness was falling fast. But unperturbed we managed to drag ourselves up river towards Twickenham for 90 minutes and then shot back again with the current in about 10 minutes flat! :-)

You can click here for photos of the event.

Many thanks to Vic and the team at the Scouts Boating Centre in Richmond for hosting the night.

Water Activities Camp at Thames Young Mariners – Wow!

Scouts

Congratulations to all the Scouts who took part in last weekend’s Richmond District Water Activities camp; it was a great success in every respect (apart from me forgetting to pack the benches :-( … many thanks to Wend for going back to fetch them from the HQ!).

The weekend was roasting hot with the much threatened rain holding off. Yippee. The Scouts tried their hands at kayaking, raft building, dragon boat racing and dinghy sailing on the TYM lagoon as well as pulling (aka rowing) on the Thames – all of which involved various degrees of getting wet and sloshing around in soaking shoes.

Everyone tells me that they had a great time, and of particular note was the success that Andrew O and Rory B enjoyed by being part of the winning Dragon Boat team during the evening’s competition. A cracking performance indeed given that there were about 140 scouts in attendance.

Hats off to Jamie B as well for deciding to still come along despite having a nasty gash in his knee which prevented him for doing some of the “no option but to get utterly soaking” sessions such as kayaking, dingy sailing and the floaty post-build bit of the raft making.

As a result, I will be arranging to present those who took part with their Dragon Boat and Canoeing activity badges. Additionally with a little extra work one evening at the boating centre in Richmond, we can also nail the Pulling (rowing) badge as well. Well done to all!

You can click on the photo above to see more of what we got up to at the Water Camp.

Huge thanks to Ian for co-leading the weekend and to Wend for ferrying all the personal kit. Without them, the weekend simply wouldn’t have happened.

Cubs go rowing at Richmond

Cubs

Despite the dreadful rain and cold, the 3HH cubs showed once again that they can’t be beaten. We went to Richmond and were lucky enough to take out two massive rowing boats. Soaking wet, we explored up the river towards Twickenham before turning around and battling the tide back to Richmond Bridge once more!
