A BEE-autiful Evening at Twickenham Apiary! 🐝

Date: 19th May 2025 Author: Matt Rogers

Our BEE-avers were well and truly BEE-dazzled by a buzzing adventure at the Twickenham Apiary, where they got up close (but safely protected!) with the incredible world of honey bees.

The evening began with an introduction to the life cycle of the honey bee and a guided tour of the hive hierarchy β€” from the majestic Queen Bee, to her loyal Drones, and the tireless Worker Bees who keep the hive running. The Beavers were captivated by the structure and teamwork within the colony.

The highlight of the visit was the β€˜Meet the Bees’ session, where Beavers watched a real hive being opened by an experienced beekeeper. From behind a bee-proof mesh in an outdoor viewing cabin, they saw live honey bees in action β€” a rare and unforgettable experience!

There were plenty of fun facts to take away, but the hands-down favourite was learning about the honey bees’ unique way of communicating β€” the famous “waggle dance”. When a bee finds a good source of nectar, it returns to the hive and performs a figure-of-eight dance with a waggle in the middle, telling its hive-mates exactly where to find it. Naturally, the Beavers gave the waggle dance a go themselves β€” with plenty of enthusiasm!

We also played games to help understand the different jobs inside the hive, explored beeswax products, and discovered just how much teamwork and purpose goes into the buzzing life of bees.

It was a truly BEE-autiful evening, full of fun, learning, and unforgettable experiences β€” all in the buzzing company of some brilliant Beavers and their new bee friends.
