Beavers Become Nature Detectives at Bushy Park!

Date: 27th May 2025 Author: Matt Rogers

Our Beavers had a fantastic time exploring the wonders of nature on a recent adventure to Bushy Park, where they became real-life nature detectives!

In partnership with the brilliant team from Friends of Bushy and Home Park, we set off on a nature walk with one mission — to find as many natural treasures as we could. From seeds and insects to animal tracks and bird calls, our Beavers excitedly ticked off all 15 items on their Nature Bingo sheets.

But this wasn’t just about spotting things — it was about looking closer, listening carefully, and learning to respect the little things we often overlook. One of the most surprising discoveries? Those small mounds dotted around the park — they’re actually ant hills, home to thousands of tiny ants! Our Beavers quickly realised why it’s important to tread carefully and leave them undisturbed.

We followed our noses to the sweet scent of lime trees, crouched down to investigate dead wood and hidden fungi, and learned that trees continue to play an important role in nature even after they die.

With the help of some excellent wildlife spotting tips, we learned to be still like the Grey Heron, discovered that buttercup flowers “go to sleep” at night to protect their pollen, and followed the stream while learning about the life cycle of the damselfly.

Of course, no trip to Bushy Park would be complete without a few special appearances from the park’s most majestic residents — the deer! These gentle giants are always a favourite, and many of our Beavers remembered their previous session with Friends of Bushy and Home Park, where we learned all about antlers and the importance of giving deer their space.

This adventure was not only a fun and active day outdoors, it helped us work towards our Outdoor and Animal Lover Activity Badges — and inspired a new appreciation for the incredible wildlife right on our doorstep.
