Beavers Discovering Hampton Heath – 2025
An Evening of Wild Nature and Community
Our Beavers ventured into the heart of Hampton Heath for an evening of exploration … and what a surprise it turned out to be. Far from the manicured lawns of traditional parks, this heath revealed itself as a thriving microhabitat, rich in biodiversity and shaped by the quiet efforts of a passionate volunteer community.
🐸 From Dry Ponds to Hidden Life
Our walk began at a dry pond, which might seem uneventful at first glance. But we soon learned that this seasonal feature plays a vital role in supporting amphibians like frogs and newts during wetter months. It also collects rainwater in winter, helping to sustain the heath’s delicate ecosystem.
Nearby, we spotted lizard mats, simple black squares laid out to absorb warmth and attract cold-blooded creatures. Though the lizards were shy, we did find field vole nests tucked away in the undergrowth.

🦊 Wildlife Clues and Clever Habitats
Ant hills scattered across the heath bore signs of fox raids, and we even tried peeking into a few fox dens. One of the most fascinating areas was the rainwater harvesting zone, which has evolved into a mini wetland teeming with ducks, wasps, and reeds.
We admired stinging nettles (from a safe distance!) and imagined the summer bounty of blackberry bushes lining the paths. A line of trees nearby serves as a roosting spot for bats, though it wasn’t quite dark enough for them to make an appearance.
🦉 A Hoot of a Fun Fact
The highlight of the evening? Learning that the classic “Twit twoo” owl call is actually a duet between male and female tawny owls. One calls “twit,” the other replies “twoo” … a charming detail that had everyone smiling.

🌱 A Community Transformed
Hampton Heath isn’t just a haven for wildlife, it’s a testament to what community care can achieve. The Friends of Hampton Heath have worked tirelessly to transform the area through regular litter picking, planting native species, and simply letting nature take its course.
Our Beavers were exceptional as always ; ready to explore, learn, and care for nature.
Whether you’re a seasoned nature lover or just curious about your local green spaces, Hampton Heath offers a refreshing reminder of the wild wonders waiting just beyond our doorstep. Thank you to the Friends of Hampton Heath for a truly memorable evening.
To find out more about the ongoing work at Hampton Heath, please contact our friends at hamptonheath.org or pop along any Saturday morning where you’ll find the volunteers. They’ll be happy to answer your questions and talk about their work.
We’d love to do more of these sessions (and camps too) with our Beavers but we are constrained by the number of available adults we have at any one time. If you’re so inclined we’d love to have you on our team. No experience necessary. Come and have a brief chat with any leader at drop-off or pick-up. We’ll do our best to answer any questions and make a point of finding answers to anything we don’t know.
